Research material pertaining principally to the organization, history, and administration of Louisiana State Seminary of Learning and Louisiana State University. Collection is comprised primarily of typescripts of correspondence of early members of the Board of Supervisors, administrators, faculty members, Confederate leaders, and alumni. Letters of David F. Boyd, president of LSU (1865-1880, 1884-1886), G. Mason Graham, chairman of the Board of Trustees and vice-president of the Board of Supervisors of LSU, W.T. Sherman, superintendent of Louisiana Military Academy in Alexandria, La. (1861), comprise the majority of the correspondence concerning official University business. Later correspondence of Walter L. Fleming and Leroy S. Boyd, son of David F. Boyd, pertains to the history of the University and its administrators and faculty. Some early correspondence concerns the execution of a young female slave, Civil war dispatches, General W. T. Sherman's political position, and in an original letter, a request from David Boyd for Sherman's assistance while held in a Union prison. Material relating to Fleming's publication, HISTORY OF LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY, 1860-1896, includes research notes, a galley proof of chapter one, newspaper clippings, transcripts of University reports, and transcripts of writings. Among the writings is an account of the Red River Expedition, biographical sketch of David F. Boyd, biographical sketch of the artist, E.B.D. Fabrino Julio, with a history of his painting, THE LAST MEETING OF LEE AND JACKSON. Collection also contains several photographs of persons associated with the University.

David French Boyd (1834-1899) was an officer in the Confederate Army who for a time was a prisoner of war on a Union boat moored in Alexandria, La. Leroy Stafford Boyd (1873-1936) was the son of Colonel David French Boyd and Esther Gertrude Wright. He attended public school in Auburn, Ala., and later graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute.
